Alex Wright
Aquaculture Specialist

Alex Wright is an interdisciplinary biologist specializing in sustainable seafood production and currently serves as an Aquaculture Specialist for the Los Angeles County Office of Food Systems. He is also completing a PhD in Animal Biology with a focus on aquaculture at the University of California, Davis.

After earning a BS in Marine Biology from the University of Delaware, Alex worked as a fisheries biologist aboard commercial fishing vessels along the Mid-Atlantic coast and later with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, collecting fisheries data on charter vessels and at commercial landing sites. These experiences, working closely with fishers, seafood distributors, and natural resource agencies, shaped his commitment to sustainable seafood and fishing communities.

This passion led Alex to pursue doctoral research at UC Davis as part of the Aquaculture Cooperative Extension research group. His work has focused on aquatic animal health and welfare, disease prevention and antimicrobial use, and fish nutritional health. He has also gained hands-on experience in hydroponic and aquaponic production, aquaculture system design, and commercial-scale operations through collaborations with local aquaculture farms.

Across his career, Alex has been engaged in many stages of the seafood supply chain, including animal growth, harvesting, processing, distribution, and consumption. His work consistently centers on supporting a healthy, sustainable, and economically viable domestic seafood system. In his current role, Alex contributes to strengthening the regional food system by helping develop markets for California aquaculture products and expanding access to locally produced, nutritious, and sustainable seafood..
